Preparation Steps Before Ceramic Coating for Maximum Durability

A ceramic coating is only as good as the paint it sits on. The coating bonds to the surface and then locks in whatever is underneath: clean, smooth, glossy paint, or swirls, embedded grit and a dull finish. That is why most of the real work in a coating job happens before any coating comes out of the bottle.

Start with a proper hand wash

The first step is a full hand wash to remove loose dirt and road grime. It sounds basic, and it is, but skipping it means every later step starts on a surface still carrying grit. That grit can drag across the paint during polishing and leave new marks. All of the ceramic coating packages at DDM Services begin with a full hand wash for exactly that reason.

Chemical decontamination

Washing removes what is sitting on the paint. It does not remove what is stuck in it. Iron particles from brake dust, tar from the road and other fallout can bond to the clear coat and leave it feeling rough even when it looks clean. Chemical decontamination loosens those particles so they can be rinsed away. A common trade check is to rub a thin plastic bag over freshly washed paint. If you can feel grit through the bag, the surface is not ready.

Polishing: how much depends on the paint

Coating over damaged paint seals the damage in. Swirl marks and light scratches stay visible, and now they sit under a hard, glossy layer. That is why polishing comes before coating. Our packages use two levels. An enhancement polish restores clarity and brings out a smooth, rich gloss before coating. An advanced multi-stage correction polish goes further and removes swirl marks, light scratches and paint imperfections.

Which one a car needs depends on its paint. A newer daily driver in decent shape may only need the enhancement polish. A dark, older or heavily swirled finish may call for more. That is why final pricing is based on vehicle size and current paint condition, and why a firm price over the phone without seeing the car is a rough guess.

A clean surface and a clean room

After polishing, the paint carries leftover oils and residue that can keep a coating from bonding evenly. Shops typically wipe the panels down with a prep solvent so the coating meets bare, clean clear coat. Dust matters as well, since a speck caught in a curing coating stays there. This is a big reason coating belongs in a controlled shop and not a driveway.

Curing and the first days after

Ceramic coatings keep hardening after application. Installers commonly ask owners to keep the car dry and out of harsh conditions for a period and to hold off on washing with strong chemicals. The exact timing varies by product and conditions, so DDM tells you what applies to your coating when you pick the car up. Curing is the last step of our process, after surface prep and polishing and then application.

What each Gyeon package covers

We install Gyeon coatings. The durations below are the ratings for each Gyeon product, not a promise about any single car, since how a coating holds up also depends on how the car is washed, stored and driven.

  • ESSENTIAL, starting at $850+: full hand wash, chemical decontamination, enhancement polish, and Gyeon CanCoat Pro on paint, rims, trim and windshield (1 year).
  • SIGNATURE, starting at $1,600+: the same wash, decontamination and enhancement polish, then Gyeon Infinite Base on all painted surfaces (5 years), Gyeon Rim Coating on wheel faces (18 months) and Gyeon View on the windshield (2 years).
  • ELITE, starting at $2,500+: advanced multi-stage correction polish, Gyeon Infinite Base and Top Coat on all painted surfaces (5 years), Rim Coating (18 months), Gyeon Trim Coating on exterior black plastic (3 years) and Gyeon View on the windshield (2 years).

If you are not sure which tier fits, the paint decides. Leased or daily-driven cars often suit ESSENTIAL. Owners keeping a vehicle long term, or driving something with deeper, more visible swirls, usually get more from the higher tiers.
